Improving earnings predictability for drivers

Challenge: Uber drivers often struggle to predict their earnings. Design features that help them estimate earnings based on historical data and upcoming events.

Uber’s mission is reimagine the way the world moves for the better. Drivers are one of the most important part of Uber’s business. By improving driver experience, predictability, and increasing their earning potential, Uber can improve driver satisfaction and retention, optimize driver allocation during peak hours, and enhance the overall driver experience, leading to a stronger partner network.

Ideas prioritization

  • Car expenses calculator: this feature is relatively easy to implement and could provide some value to drivers. However, on its own, it may not be very impactful.
  • Earning calculator: this feature is the most impactful of the three, but it is also the most difficult to implement. There are many factors that can influence a driver's earnings, and it would be difficult to create a calculator that is accurate for all drivers in all situations.
  • Earning forecast: this feature is a middle ground between previous two. It offers a degree of predictability for drivers, while acknowledging the variability in income due to various factors.

Increase predictability of monthly earnings for full-time Uber drivers to help them be more in control of their finances.

Measure

Engagement with “Plan earnings” feature:

  • Adoption rate: Percentage of full-time drivers who access and utilize the Plan Earnings features compared to just viewing “Opportunities”.
  • Frequency of feature use: Track how often full-time drivers access features within Plan Earnings. High frequency will suggest active engagement.

Impact on driver financial management:

  • Accuracy of earnings forecast: Compare the forecasted earnings based on planned trips with the actual earnings drivers achieve. A high level of accuracy will indicate the feature helps them manage expectations.
